The Norwegian Volunteers of Waffen SS

The Norwegians that volunteered to fight on German side during World War 2 have a controversial and often misunderstood history.  They have by many been described as the fiercest and best soldiers ever to come out of Norway.  Others describe them simply as traitors.

What is a fact is that 15,000 Norwegians volunteered and were willing to fight and give their life for something they truly believed in.  A little over 6,000 ended up in service for the Waffen SS, of which 950 died during the war.  Those that were not killed in combat returned to a Norway that wanted revenge.  Many spent years in Russian concentration camps after the war, and quite a few  were killed there.

The Norwegians served in virtually all theatres of the war and in most German SS divisions.  However, there were certain divisions that were more “Norwegian” than others.  Some even purely Norwegian.  This website emphasizes these units and the soldiers serving in them.

Very few Norwegian SS volunteers have been willing to speak about their experiences publicly.  This web page addresses their history through text and photos.  It looks at the units they fought with, and also takes a look at the uniforms and insignia unique to the Norwegian volunteers.  We have also investigated what has happened to the Norwegian volunteers after the war.

This web site is also jointly with www.frontkjemper.info hosting a forum on Norwegian SS volunteers, which we ask you to participate in.  See links on left side.

This web page does not look at who was right and who was wrong as we believe many others have done this before.  This site is purely for historical purposes.  It is not intended to promote any radical political or racist views.  This web site is meant to be informational and politically neutral.  If you came to this web site as a twisted right wing radical or for any political reason we rather not have you here and kindly ask you to click here.

Text Box: Official visit on Norway’s Constitution Day, 17th May 1942, on the Leningrad front. From left, DNL Commander Arthur Qvist, Minister of Justice Sverre Riisnes, Minister President Vidkun Quisling, Leg. Gottenberg, Leg. Ustf Braseth, Leg. Oscha Østring and Leg Oscha A. Nilsen.
Text Box: The first two Norwegian volunteers were Ministers from the Quisling government. Sverre Riisnes (Minister of Justice) and Jonas Lie (Minister of Police) participated as War Correspondents during the Balkan campagn Spring 1941. They served in Leibstandarte Adolph Hitler. Jonas Lie became one of the most prominent Norwegian officers and later led the 1st Police Company on the Leningrad front 1942/43.

Their frontline experience for LAH was rather limited, and they must have served under very protected circumstances. It is believed that their service was much more symbolical than anything else.
